My husband and I purchased one of these First Years decor gates recently for two reasons: 1) we’re having a baby in May, gotta get going on this stuff sometime, and 2) we were babysitting my 1-year-old nephew this weekend. Like most little boys, he doesn’t just walk, he runs, and he can and does get into everything. We placed this gate at the top of our basement stairs to keep him safely on the first floor and it worked perfectly.
It was easy to install with its pressure mounting, and it comes with hardware to actually mount it to the door frame, so it’s nice to have that option for the future. I’d like to get another for the 2nd floor stairwell too, but we have wrought iron banisters that I’m not sure it’ll mount to very easily, so I’ll have to find some kind of way to adapt it there safely. That wrought iron issue is the only reason I’m giving this four stars instead of five.
As the previous reviewer stated, it also serves as a great dog gate. My 2 cats were able to jump over it (but not slip through it), while my 35-lb. pooch and my brother’s 70-lb. behemoth sat on the other side and whined.
The door isn’t easy to open if you don’t know how it works, which is great, because if it was too easy, my nephew would have wasted no time exploiting its weakness. You do have to make sure it latches behind you, but I didn’t know it was self latching in the first place, so I don’t really mind closing the door behind myself (as my mom would say, I wasn’t raised in a barn. . . ). I don’t like to step over it, but it’s not totally impossible (I’m also 5’6″ but I do have long legs for my size).
What’s most important to me is that it’s proved to be quite safe AND it still looks good. Seems sad that so many of these baby gates are bulky and blerg and bright white. Just because I’m having a baby doesn’t mean I want to give up my hopes at having a chic vintage house :)

This is a great product – easy to pressure mount – gate works great (and silent) although you do have to pull it closed if you want it latched – it is lower than some, so less obtrusive – but I was expecting a dark walnut or mahogany finish and it is actually painted black – it was almost a deal breaker because it did not match any photo I had seen and was not what I expected when purchasing this expensive gate – but we decided it worked with our decor anyway and might even be better than a missmatched wood tone – overall we love it as an attractive and more permanent solution for our pet area.

We purchased this gate to keep the dog away from the cat food and litter. (The cats jump over the gate, the dog doesn’t). Previously, we had a cheap plastic gate that we had to step over, and when it broke we decided it would be worth while to spend a little more to get something better looking that we could step through. The directions were clear and the gate was easy for me to install by myself. I did not have to use the included extensions. When you take it out of the box there is a gap between the frame and the swinging gate, but the directions let you know this is not a defect and it goes away when the gate is properly installed. There is an included tool which I found necessary to get the gate properly tightened. The gate looks very nice, although I wish it came in white also. The wood feels like it might dent or scuff easily, but the cats have only put one small scratch in it so far (in about a month). It opens easily with one hand and the mechanism seems too difficult for a small child to perform – you slide a button with your thumb and lift at the same time. The gate opens both ways and self closes but does not self latch – you have to pull it shut to latch it. The piece of wood at the bottom that you have to step over is 2 inches tall. The gate is 29 inches tall, which is a little too tall for me to step over if I wanted to (I’m 5’6″). Overall I am very satisfied with this gate and I believe it will last us quite some time, although I did find the price a little painful.

It is worth mentioning that the dog does not attempt to jump over, push over, or otherwise get past the gate, so it has not been tested in that way at our house.
