What Causes Homelessness?
It is a sad fact of modern life that many thousands of people in the UK are still homeless. Homelessness is a huge problem and those who are left homeless are often looked down on or considered to be failures, when, in fact, they should be looked upon with compassion and taken care of. There are lots of reasons why homelessness occurs and it usually isn’t down to fecklessness on the part of the homeless but rather, circumstances which are out of their control.
Common Causes Of Homelessness
The issue of homelessness is a complex one and there are many reasons why someone may find themselves homeless but, a few of the common ones can be found below:
Debt
One big reason for homelessness is the inability to cover mortgage or rent payments. This can eventually lead to whole families having their home taken away and having to deal with homelessness.
Mental Health
Those with serious mental health issues are amongst those who are most at risk of becoming homeless and often receive little or no support from the community or healthcare professionals.
Institutional Backgrounds
A large percentage of homelessness is made up of people who have spent time in an institutional environment. This could be anything from prison to children’s homes or even the armed forces. People with such backgrounds often find it difficult to adjust to normal life and end up on the streets.
